I have quire a wide foot but also have a high instep. The strap that goes over the foot was just long enough but it then didnt fit properly. I would say if u r a 40 go up a size. If u have a wide foot or high instep these r not for u. Such a shame as they r a well made sandleI have quite a wide foot, but these fit perfectly. My first pair of Birkenstock but I am sure it is not the last. Arrived super fast. I am happy
